In Communities

It was great to travel to Hall Beach, the community was lovely and the children and youth were great to chat with. My highlight was playing our communication game with the students and listening to there many ways on how to communicate. It was great feeling so welcomed in the community which allowed me to talk to many people with ease.

David and Jeff spent a week in Kinngait (Cape Dorset) running the Raise Your Voice: Self-Advocacy Workshop in the schools. They battled near blizzard conditions all week walking through town. One of the highlights was providing food supplies to make pizzas with young people at the youth centre. David and Jeff were also excited to be able to leave their handprints on the wall where others had. The youth drop in-pop and talk is a great mental health event held every second Thursday to give youth a space to speak about their issues in a safe and supported place.

It was an exciting time for Diana and Kim while in Whale Cove as there were a few polar bears in the area. They would like to thanks the community members who drove them from place to place making sure they were safe. Also, a big thank you to the young people who came to the youth centre and took part in a yo-yo contest.

David travelled to both Gjoa Haven and Kugaaruk to deliver the Raise Your Voice: Self-Advocacy Workshop and meet with community members. He saw several fantastic programs being delivered in each school and hopes to return to meet more youth and spread awareness of child rights and the RCYO!

While in Grise Fiord, David met many people who were tremendously welcoming and were always glad to hear he was having a good time there. He really enjoyed the opportunity he had to go into the fiord and to see the glacier.

Warm spring weather in Naujaat meant that many community members were out and about wearing light jackets or even just t-shirts in mid-May! Sharon had fun presenting the Raise Your Voice: Self-Advocacy Workshop to many students in the beautiful new high school and playing the Rights Dice Game with the children in grades 3 to 6. Sharon thanks the Grade 8 students for teaching her how to quickly fold an RCYO Frisbee so it fits in the carrying pouch!

Sharon’s visit to Igloolik included spending several enjoyable days at the high school presenting the Raise Your Voice: Self-Advocacy Workshop. She enjoyed seeing children and youth playing out every day and appreciated the friendly greetings and helpful directions she received from everyone walking by.

When in Resolute and Arctic Bay, David delivered several Raise Your Voice: Self-Advocacy Workshops with youth and would like to thank everyone who attended. One of the highlights for David was meeting many young people who were curious and happy to speak with him about our office.

Sherry and Sharon enjoyed chatting about life in the community with many friendly Kimmirummiut. Thank you to the high school students for their lively participation in the Raise Your Voice: Self-Advocacy Workshop. One of the most memorable moments was seeing a jet ski in the harbour shortly after a snow storm. What fun!

While visiting Rankin Inlet, Lori delivered eight Raise Your Voice: Self-Advocacy Workshops for youth in grades 8 -12. Thank you to Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik, Pulaarvik Friendship Center, the drop in centre, and the Northern Store for accommodating Lori by providing space for workshop activities and the opportunity to spread awareness about child rights and the work of our office.
