The Representative for Children and Youth, Sherry McNeil-Mulak along with the Advocacy Specialist, Andrew Nunez, visited the communities of Pangnirtung and Qikqiqtarjuaq from March 27- April 1, 2017. During the visits, Sherry and Andrew had an opportunity to meet with key community service providers such as hamlet employees, teachers, school principals, health and mental health care workers, social workers and RCMP officers.
Most importantly, RCYO staff visited students in each school to discuss the roles and responsibilities of the Representative for Children and Youth’s office, and the importance of young people’s rights. One of the highlights of the trip, was connecting with youth during a teen pizza night at the local youth center in Pangnirtung - this event also included community volunteers, teachers and RCMP officers.
The RCYO wishes to thank everyone who took time to listen and ask questions, to understand what the RCYO does, and to learn about young people’s rights. Sherry and Andrew have returned to the office with lots of valuable community feedback, which they have already shared with the entire RCYO team!
