Parents, Families and the RCY Act

The Representative for Children and Youth Act, like the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, champions the role parents and families play in children’s development. In fact, one of our office’s duties is to promote understanding between service providers and children, youth and their families.

The RCY Act also outlines a number of principles that guide our staff’s day-to-day work with families.

  • Families are the main source of care and guidance for children and youth.
  • Relationships between young people and their families must be respected, and, wherever possible, supported and strengthened.
  • Family support should be sought, wherever possible, for decisions and actions that affect children and youth.
