The Representative for Children and Youth Act

The Representative for Children and Youth Act lays out our office’s duties and powers, as well as what government departments must do to support the Act. The RCY Act also describes a few key principles that guide our work. We apply these principles to everything we do. These principles are:

  • decisions and actions affecting young people must be consistent with their best interests
  • culture and traditions strengthen young people and their families’ resilience
  • decisions and actions involving young Inuit must respect Inuit culture
  • families are the main source of care and guidance for children and youth
  • relationships between young people and their families must be respected and, wherever possible, supported and strengthened
  • wherever possible, families should be involved in and support decisions and actions that affect their children
  • cooperation and respect should be used when resolving concerns that affect children and youth
