Privacy Notice

The Representative for Children and Youth (RCY) maintains this website to inform the public about:

  • the rights and interests of children and youth
  • the role of the Representative
  • the RCY office and its services

Our office is committed to ensuring your privacy when you visit this site.

Personal Information

This website does not automatically gather personal information from you, such as your name, phone number or email address. We only receive this if you choose to send us an email that includes your contact information. If you prefer to not send us your personal contact information via email, we welcome you to contact the Representative in person or by phone, fax or mail. We keep all information that you provide us confidential in accordance with the Representative for Children and Youth Act.

Collection of Information by this Website

All internet web servers automatically collect certain standard information about visits to a website. When you visit this website, our web server gathers and stores limited information needed for the operation, evaluation and improvement of the website. We only use this information to assess and improve our information services and the functioning of the site. This assists the Representative to effectively carry out her duties under the Representative for Children and Youth Act. The collection and use of this information is consistent with section 40 of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Information collected by our web server includes:

  • the date and time of your visit;
  • the web pages or services that you access;
  • the page from which you arrived;
  • the type of browser and operating system used; and
  • the internet protocol (IP) address that your computer uses.

IP addresses are unique numbers assigned to all internet users by their internet service providers (ISP). This address can be used to determine the domain name of your internet service provider (eg gov.nu.ca or mycompany.com). An IP address does not usually identify an individual on its own. Sometimes, however, it may be used along with other information to locate and identify an individual. Information collected by our web server that could be used to identify an individual is kept confidential in accordance with the Representative for Children and Youth Act.

Cookies

This website also uses session cookies to help you move around the website and to give us statistical information about how visitors use our site. A “cookie” is a small text file that is sent to your computer by our web server and stored on your computer while you are visiting our website. It allows the server to “remember” specific information about your browser’s visit while you are connected to the website. Session cookies do not collect information that could identify you. They are also erased when you close your internet browser. We do not use persistent cookies. Persistent cookies are kept on your computer hard drive until a set expiry date and may store information that can be used to identify you when you visit a website.

Security

The Representative for Children and Youth protects your personal information by making reasonable security arrangements to protect this website against risks such as unauthorized access. The RCY computer network uses software programs to monitor unauthorized attempts to upload or change information on this website or otherwise damage it. We do not attempt to identify website visitors or usage patterns through these security measures unless an attempt to damage the site is detected. The information that you submit to us on this website is secure once it reaches the RCY server. However, information that is in transit between your computer and the server may not be secure. You are welcome to contact us in person or by phone, fax or mail if you prefer. This website may include links to websites or social media sites operated by other governments, organizations or businesses. The RCY is not responsible for the privacy practices or content of external sites.
